Data Loss Protection - a statistical analysis

Here are some Quick Facts about Data Loss that may surprise you

According to a report on the economic costs of data loss by David M. Smith, Ph.D, over 6% of PCs will suffer severe data loss in any given year - a total of 4.6 million incidents in the U.S alone.

  • Hardware failure, including damage by power surge and drive failure (40%)
  • Human error, including accidental deletion (29%)
  • Software file corruption (13%)
  • Virus-infection (6%)
  • Theft (9%)
  • Hardware loss, including floods, fires, lightning, power failure (3%)

The costs of these incidents are staggering since the likelihood of successfully recovering the data is relatively low unless proper steps to backup up the data are already in place.

According to the report, the costs due to technical services, lost productivity, and the value of lost data bring the expected cost* for each data loss incident to $3,957.
