According to a report on the economic costs of data loss by David M. Smith, Ph.D, over 6% of PCs will suffer severe data loss in any given year - a total of 4.6 million incidents in the U.S alone.

The report identifies six main causes of loss of data*.

• Hardware failure, including damage by power surge and drive failure (40%)
• Human error, including accidental deletion (29%)
• Software file corruption (13%)
• Virus-infection (6%)
• Theft (9%)
• Hardware loss, including floods, fires, lightning, power failure (3%)

The costs of these incidents are staggering since the likelihood of successfully recovering the data is relatively low unless proper steps to backup up the data are already in place.
